Staines-upon-Thames sits in Surrey about 17 miles away from the city centre of London. On nearby Staines Moor there has been evidence of neolithic settlement and there has been a Thames crossing in the town since Roman times. It pops up in the Domesday Book in 1086 under the ownership of Westminister Abbey. It was the site of a cavalry charge in 1805 as part of the celebrations after the victories over the French and Spanish fleets.

Although it is right in the middle of the commuter belt Staines has also attracted some big business in its own right in recent years, thanks in part to the proximity of the capital and nearby Heathrow airport. Bupa, Siemans and British Gas all have major offices there and the high street is home to many of the major brands that you will find in London itself.

The TW19 area has a strong sporting heritage with the local football and rugby clubs supplemented by cricket and hockey pitches as well as the local swimming club and boat club which both compete in events up to international level.

In terms of notable residents the indie band Hard-Fi were brought up here as were comedian Bobby Davro and TV personality Jon Tickle. However, the most famous resident of Staines is arguably a fictional one, with Sacha Baron Cohen character Ali G remembered for his passion for the area in both his TV series and movie appearances.
