Highbury was originally made up some of the manor of Tolentone according to the Domesday Book. The manor lasted until 1271 and then it was replaced by a new building in the south east on top of a hill, and is where the name of the area derives. Archaeological evidence suggest Roman or Norman settlements were located here. The ownership of the manor passed between different hands but was seized in 1381 during the Peasants Revolt. The land eventually came under ownership of the crown but was sold off to wealthy stockbroker John Dawes who developed the manor. It would alter become a school and then be demolished and replaced by the incumbent Eton House flats. Highbury Barn was developed considerably over time, with it becoming larger and having more facilities such as gardens and a bowling green added and would be used to host events.
Up to 1870 most of the homes were Italian style villas but terraced homes were soon created. After the Blitz many places were rebuilt but new sites were constructed. From the 1980s gentrification occurred with the villas being restored. Arsenal Stadium, was here and home to Premier league team Arsenal. F. but has since been demolished and new apartment buildings were constructed on the land. The former Wessex Studios resided in Highbury and had artists such as Queen, the Rolling Stones, the Sex Pistols and the Clash record here. A TV and film recording studio was not far away but was also closed and replaced by housing.
